Drive in movie theatres have been a part of the cinema industry since the 1930’s. There popularity peaked in the 1950s-1970s When we think of nostalgic Americana, we think of the outdoors theatres. We have romanticized the idea after seeing countless films and TV shows telling us that summer during those time periods wasn’t complete without a trip to the drive in. Did you even go on a date in high school if you didn’t makeout in a car during a drive in movie?
Even with those fond memories, drive ins have been on the decline since the 1980’s. This year however, the COVID-19 Pandemic has changed everything. Coronavirus led to regular cinemas being shut down and had people looking for movies outdoors once again. This has led to the increased interest of drive ins and an increase in their business.
Many places that never show films are even getting into the drive in business like Walmart and parks. It will be really interesting to see if after the pandemic is over if the renewed interest remains.
The future looks brighter than ever for drive ins.
